We really have lost count of the number of people out there who reach out each month for advice on caring for their clownfish but as their popularity increases, so does the number of people asking for advice.

One thing that we have noticed many people asking recently is for advice on the minimum tank size for their clownfish and its great to see so many people asking this as tank size really is an important thing to get right that so many people get wrong.

Due to seeing so many people get the tank sizes wrong for their fish we decided to publish this dedicated article to try and help as many of our readers as possible.

Please note, even though we will be recommending the minimum tank size fo\r a number of commonly kept clownfish below, it is always better to do with a larger tank if possible so please keep this in mind, we are only covering the minimum, if possible, go larger.

Minimum Tank Size for Ocellaris Clownfish!

The Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) is, by far, the most commonly kept clownfish in the world and its also one of the hardiest making it a perfect choice for those who are just starting out with keeping marine fish.

Ocellaris Clownfish are found in large numbers throughout the Indo-Pacific region and they have been introduced to many other areas of the world through the aquarium trade.

Ocellaris Clownfish grow to a maximum size of around 4 inches (10 cm) making them a perfect choice for those with smaller tanks as they do not grow too large.

The minimum tank size for Ocellaris Clownfish should be no less than 10 gallons, with a 20 gallon being the recommended tank size.

Minimum Tank Size for Misbar Clownfish!

The Misbar Clownfish (Amphiprion percula) is very similar in appearance to the Ocellaris Clownfish but it is not as commonly kept.

Misbar Clownfish are found throughout the Indo-Pacific region and they too have been introduced to many other areas of the world through the aquarium trade.

They grow to a maximum size of around 4 inches (10 cm) which is the same as the Ocellaris Clownfish making them a good choice for those with smaller tanks.

The minimum tank size for Misbar Clownfish should be no less than 10 gallons, with a 20 gallon being the recommended tank size.

Minimum Tank Size for Snowflake Clownfish

The Snowflake Clownfish (Amphiprion leucippe) is another clownfish that is very similar in appearance to the Ocellaris Clownfish but it is not as commonly kept.

Snowflake Clownfish are found throughout the Indo-Pacific region and they too have been introduced to many other areas of the world through the aquarium trade.

They grow to a maximum size of around 4 inches (10 cm) which is the same as the Ocellaris Clownfish making them a good choice for those with smaller tanks.

Although a Snowflake Clownfish can technically live in a tank that is 10 gallons, they do so much better in a 20 gallon tank so we would recommend this be the minimum tank size if possible.

Minimum Tank Size for Picasso Clownfish

The Picasso Clownfish (Amphiprion perideraion) is a very popular clownfish that is easily recognisable due to its unique colouration.

Some Picasso Clownfish can be more aggressive than other types of clownfish while also being more stressed so we would recommend a minimum tank size of 20 gallons if possible to try and keep them calm and relaxed.

Minimum Tank Size for Frostbite Clownfish

The Frostbite Clownfish (Amphiprion ephippium) is another clownfish that is very popular due to its unique colouration.

Frostbite Clownfish are found in the Western Pacific region and they grow to a maximum size of around 4 inches (10 cm).

The Frostbite Clownfish is a very active swimmer so we would recommend a minimum tank size of 30 gallons for this fish.

Minimum Tank Size for Wyoming White Clownfish

The Wyoming White Clownfish (Amphiprion wyomingensis) is a very rare clownfish that are difficult to find and often have a high price tag but they are becoming increasingly popular.

They are very active swimmers and love a tank that they are able to explore so a minimum tank size of 20 gallons can work but you really should be going with 30 gallons if possible.

Minimum Tank Size for Black Storm Clownfish

The Black Storm Clownfish (Amphiprion melanopus) is the final clownfish on our list and they are one of the more aggressive clownfish.

The Black Storm Clownfish is a very active swimmer that can get stressed easily and will often be aggressive to other tank mates in its aquarium.

If you are new to keeping clownfish then we would recommend that you go with one of the other types of clownfish if possible but they can do well in a 30 gallon tank or even a 20 gallon tank with a perfect setup.

Minimum Tank Size for Maroon Clownfish

The Maroon Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus) is a very popular clownfish that is easily recognisable due to its unique colouration.

Some Maroon Clownfish can be more aggressive than other types of clownfish while also being more stressed so we would recommend a minimum tank size of 20 gallons if possible to try and keep them calm and relaxed.

If you want to keep a pair of maroon clownfish in your tank then you are often looking at a tank over 50 gallons though so please keep this in mind, a 20 gallon tank is not suitable for a paid of maroon clownfish!

Minimum Tank Size for Tomato Clownfish

The Tomato Clownfish (Amphiprion frenatus) is a very popular clownfish that is easily recognisable due to the bulk of its body being orange with a tint of red.

Tomato clownfish will do well with a minimum tank size of 30 gallons but most tomato clownfish do need to be in planted tanks or tanks with plenty of cover for them to hide.

Minimum Tank Size for Clarkii Clownfish

The Clarkii Clownfish (Amphiprion clarkii) is seeing a slight increase in popularity within the fish keeping hobby and they usually need a minimum tank size of 30 gallons if possible but larger tanks are usually better for them.
