Reptile Sausages – Everything You Need To Know!

With the surge in the popularity of keeping pet reptiles continuing, there have been a number of new products released onto the market recently to try and make it as easy as possible to keep a pet reptile.

One of the main complaints that we see from reptile keepers is that they don’t like the idea of having to keep insects, pinkies or fuzzies in their home for their pet reptiles to eat.

This has caused a number of entrepreneurs to try and solve this problem and although a number of alternatives have been released onto the market, the only one that has really gained any traction are reptile sausages.

With reptile sausages rapidly gaining in popularity right now, we have noticed more and more people asking various questions about switching their reptile diet over to some form of reptile sausage.

Due to this, we have decided to publish this article going over everything you need to know about reptile sausages.

Our hope is that we will be able to help you work out if reptile sausages are a suitable alternative to the current food you give to your pet reptile.

Although reptile sausages can work out a little more expensive, they have the advantages of being much easier to use and not having to have insects or dead mice in your fridge or freezer making them a very attractive option for many people.

What Are Reptile Sausages?

Reptile sausages are a type of food that is specifically designed to be fed to pet reptiles.

They are made from a variety of different ingredients including, but not limited to, insects, vegetables, and fruit.

The mix of ingredients in each sausage will differ depending on the manufacturer and the reptile they are designed to feed but they all have one goal and that is to create a food source that is easy to store and easy to feed to pet reptiles.

Most manufacturers of reptile sausages will have a number of different mixes available to meet the nutritional requirements of a number of the more commonly kept reptiles.

This means that they will usually offer carnivore, insectivore, and omnivore options to make sure you can quickly, easily, and cheaply meet the dietary requirements of your pet reptile.

The Advantages Of Reptile Sausages

One of the advantages of reptile sausages over other forms of reptile food is that they don’t have the same smell as live insects or dead mice.

This makes them much more attractive for people who are put off by the thought of keeping insects or dead animals in their home.

In addition to this, reptile sausages are also a lot less messy than other forms of reptile food as they don’t contain any guts or blood which can make quite a mess when feeding live prey items.

Another advantage of reptile sausages is that they can be stored for long periods of time without needing to be refrigerated making them very convenient for people who travel or who aren’t able to get to a reptile store on a regular basis.

The Disadvantages Of Reptile Sausages

Although there are a number of advantages to feeding reptile sausages to your pet reptile, there are also a few disadvantages that you need to be aware of.

One of the main disadvantages is that they can be quite a lot more expensive than other forms of reptile food such as live insects or frozen mice.

This is because they are a specialist product and the ingredients used to make them are usually quite expensive.

In addition to this, reptile sausages can also be quite difficult to find as they are not stocked in all pet stores.

This means that you may need to order them online which can add to the cost as you will usually have to pay for shipping.

Another disadvantage of reptile sausages is that they don’t provide your reptile with the same level of mental stimulation as live prey items.

This means that they are not ideal for reptiles who are prone to boredom or who need a lot of mental stimulation in their diet.

Finally, reptile sausages can also be quite difficult to eat for some reptiles, especially if they are not used to eating food that is not moving.

Are Reptile Sausages Safe?

Reptile sausages are generally considered to be safe for most reptiles but there are a few things that you need to be aware of before feeding them to your pet.

One of the main things to remember is that many reptile sausage products are not a nutritionally complete food source for your pet reptile.

Depending on the specific product, they may be suitable for between 50% and 80% of your pet reptiles diet.

That said though, there are a small number of options that do apparently contain everything that your pet reptile needs with more nutritionally complete reptile sausages expected to be released soon.

As long as you are aware of this, then there is no reason why reptile sausages can’t form a part of your pet reptiles diet.

Just make sure that you supplement them with other forms of food to make sure your pet reptile is getting all the nutrients they need.

How To Feed Reptile Sausages To Your Pet Reptile!

One of the advantages of reptile sausages is that they are very easy to feed to your pet reptile.

The most popular way to do this is by simply cutting them into small pieces and offering them to your pet as part of their regular diet.

Another popular method is to cut them into small blocks and then offer them to your reptile as a treat or snack.

This can be a great way to keep your pet reptile entertained as they try to eat their way through the smaller bits of sausage that you can hide around their vivarium to offer some mental stimulation!

You also need to make sure that your reptile sausages have been correctly defrosted prior to giving them to your pet reptile too.

What Reptiles Can Eat Reptile Sausages?

Reptile sausages can be fed to a wide variety of reptiles including snakes, lizards, turtles, and tortoises.

The vast majority of pet reptile owners who have tried them say that their reptiles seem to enjoy eating them just as much as they enjoy eating other forms of food such as live insects or frozen mice.

As long as you are aware of the potential disadvantages that we mentioned earlier, then there is no reason why reptile sausages can’t form a part of your pet reptiles diet.

Just make sure that you supplement them with other forms of food to make sure your pet reptile is getting all the nutrients they need.

With problems with Calcium and vitamin D being so common in many types of reptiles, we would recommend you supplement these no matter what diet your pet reptile is on.

What Are the Best Reptile Sausages on The Market?

Reptilinks are the most well-known brand that supplies reptile sausages and in our opinion, they are currently the best.

That said, there are a number of smaller start-up companies also offering reptile sausages too.

Due to Reptilinks being so established and well known, they are usually able to offer better products for a lower price tag making them the better option for most people.

With reptile sausages growing in popularity so rapidly, we do expect a number of other companies to offer their own reptile sausages to the reptile keeping community so this may change in time.

Can You Freeze Reptile Sausages?

Reptile sausages can be frozen and then thawed out and used at a later date.

This can be a great way to store them if you are not planning on using them all straight away.

Just make sure that you defrost them correctly before offering them to your pet reptile as some types of bacteria can grow if they are not defrosted properly.

You should also make sure that you don’t refreeze reptile sausages once they have been defrosted too as this can cause them to go off.
