Why Do Platy Fish Stay At The Top Of Their Aquarium?

The most common reason platy fish stay at the top of their aquarium is because the water temperature is too warm for them.

Platies are a tropical fish and prefer water that is between 72-82 degrees Fahrenheit. If the water in your platy’s tank is any warmer than this, they will start to experience stress and may even die.

If the water in your platy’s tank is too warm, you will need to take steps to lower the temperature. This can be done by adding an aquarium chiller or by simply moving the platies’ tank to a cooler location.

The vast majority of heating units for aquariums will have settings on them that you are able to adjust to reduce the temperature of the tank too.

Another reason platies may stay at the top of their aquarium is because the water quality is poor. This can be due to a number of factors, such as high levels of ammonia or nitrites, or low levels of oxygen in the water.

These are all relatively easy to fix in most aquarium setups but in some cases, the CO2 levels may be high in your tank causing your platy to stay near the top of its tank with this being slightly more difficult fix.
